How ApplyTexas essays work

ApplyTexas is a shared application platform, not a single essay assignment. Students complete common application questions first, then answer school-specific questions or essays for each institution on their list.

That makes ApplyTexas planning different from Common App planning. The first job is not picking a prompt. The first job is building an accurate inventory of what each Texas school actually requires.

Build a school-specific inventory

Create a table with one row per school and columns for personal essay, major short answer, activity short answer, honors essays, scholarship essays, optional context, word limits, and deadlines.

This small inventory prevents the common mistake of treating one Texas essay as if it covers every school. It also shows which answers can be reused and which need bespoke detail.

Write the personal essay first

If a school asks for an open-topic personal essay, draft it before the shorter questions. The longer essay establishes voice, values, and one core story. Then the short answers can fill in gaps instead of repeating the same material.

A strong personal essay should not read like a complete resume. It should choose one story or thread and let the reader watch you think through it.

Handle short answers with discipline

Most short answers work best in three moves: direct answer, specific evidence, brief reflection. If the prompt asks why a major, name the field, show the experience that made it real, and point toward what you want to keep exploring.

If the prompt asks which activity you are proud of, do not list all activities. Choose one responsibility or moment that demonstrates judgment.

Reuse responsibly

ApplyTexas often rewards reuse, but only after you check fit. A Common App essay may work for an open-topic Texas essay. A Common App activity paragraph may work inside a short answer. But school-specific prompts still need school-specific framing.

Before submitting, search each draft for another school's name, major, or program language. Copy-paste errors are easy to make when application volume gets high.

Frequently asked questions

Is ApplyTexas just one essay?

No. ApplyTexas is a shared application platform, but essays and short answers are often set by each school.

Can I reuse a Common App essay on ApplyTexas?

Often, especially for open-topic personal essays. Always check the word limit and the school's exact wording first.

Should I answer optional ApplyTexas questions?

Answer optional context questions only when they add useful context. Do not use them as a second personal statement.
